what actually happens during a wedding dress appointment
there’s a lot of mystery around wedding dress shopping. you book the appointment. you walk into a bridal shop. and then… what? are you supposed to know what to do? how many dresses do you try on? does someone just start pulling gowns? when are you supposed to say yes?
if you’ve never done it before, it’s easy to build the whole experience up in your head. so let’s take some of the mystery out of it.
first: you walk in.
here’s no test. you don’t need to know your dream silhouette, the difference between mikado and crepe, or exactly what you’re looking for. you just need to show up.
before your appointment, we’ll have you fill out a style questionnaire where you can share your Pinterest board, wedding details, budget, inspiration, and anything else you want your stylist to know. this is your chance to give us the inside scoop before you even walk through the door.
when your appointment starts, we’ll touch base to see if anything has changed since you filled it out. if you’ve been to other bridal appointments, we’ll ask how those went, what you loved, what you didn’t, and whether anything surprised you along the way.
then we’ll take a little tour of the shop. you’ll get to see everything we have hanging, touch the fabrics, check out the details, and start getting a feel for what catches your eye. it’s also a great way for your stylist to see what you naturally gravitate toward before we start pulling gowns. your stylist already has a pretty good idea of what you’re looking for, we’re just here to dig a little deeper and figure out what feels right on you.
then, we start pulling gowns.
this is where having a stylist makes a difference.
you might come in thinking you want something fitted, simple, and completely free of lace. your stylist might pull exactly that. they might also pull something you would never have chosen for yourself.
try it anyway.
we’re not trying to put you in something we like. we’re trying to understand what happens when you put it on.
sometimes the gown you immediately gravitate toward is the one. sometimes the unexpected one teaches us something important about what you actually like.
both are useful.
then you get to see yourself as a bride.
this part can feel a little surreal.
before we do our grand reveal to your guests, you’ll see yourself in the mirror, and start figuring out what feels right.
maybe you love it. maybe you don’t. maybe you’re somewhere in between. tell us.
we genuinely want your honest reaction.
“i hate this.”
“i love the neckline but not the skirt.”
“this is so not me.”
“wait… i think i love this.”
all of it helps.
your stylist isn't going to be offended. we didn't design the gowns. the more honest you are, the better we can understand what you're looking for.
you’ll try more than one.
there’s no magic number.
some people find their dress on the first try. some need to see a few different silhouettes before they know what feels right. you might go back and forth. you might put something back on. you might realize the first dress was actually the one all along. there is no “correct” way to shop.
and then there’s the moment.
or maybe there isn't.
this is one of our favorite things to debunk. you don't have to cry. you don't have to shake. you don't have to have the big dramatic moment you've seen on television.
you might say:
“i don't want to take this off.”
“i feel like myself.”
“i can picture myself getting married in this.”
or maybe you just look in the mirror and know. your reaction will be your reaction.
when you find the one,
we celebrate.
at strike, every bridal appointment ends with a celebratory toast + confetti pop when you say yes.
because even if the decision feels calm and obvious, it's still a big deal.
you found the dress!
you can check one very important thing off the list. and then you get to celebrate it.
so, what actually happens at a bridal appointment?
you try things on.
you change your mind.
you laugh.
you probably surprise yourself.
you figure out what you like and what you don't.
you have an expert helping you along the way.
and hopefully, somewhere between the first gown and the last, you recognize yourself in the mirror.
that's the appointment.
no pressure to perform.
no perfect reaction.
just 90 minutes to see what feels like you.
